Summer brings humidity to the Washington region and our hair is the first to succumb. Are you fantasizing about a more manageable hairstyle? Local salons offer different solutions to our steamy summer challenge – straighter, fuller, or curlier.

Personalized selections playing on a iPod - one of the ways Marilyn makes her customers comfortable at Marilyn's House of Style Salon

These hairstyle changes can have you looking good for your special celebrations, cutting down on your daily hair routine, and even changing your whole outlook on life.

Straightening Your Hair

When you walk into Marilyn’s House of Style Salon in the Salon Plaza building at Congressional North, the first thing you notice is the bright turquoise walls and animal prints, then you see the sign “Marilyn Can Do It!” and she can. Marilyn Opitz is a one-woman dynamo who’s been serving clients in Rockville for 27 years. Some of her younger clientele had their first haircuts with her and now they’re graduating from college. She knows her customers, plays their favorite type of music from Pandora on her iPod, and gives each person her undivided attention. After a long day at work, people appreciate sitting down for her personalized service. Marilyn’s respectful of customers who love their longtime hairstyles, but ready to suggest new options if asked.

If you have been spending each day with a blow dryer and hair iron trying to control the summer frizz, Marilyn recommends Lasio Brazilian Hair Straightening. The treatment deeply conditions leaving hair in better shape.

Lasio Brazilian Hair Straightening, offered at Marilyn's House of Style Salon, lasts for 4-6 months

The straightening lasts from 4 to 6 months and each treatment works cumulatively making the hair even straighter. A hotter-than-usual flat iron seals in the chemical treatment. Most flat irons are 350 to 400 degrees and professionals will use 425, but this process requires a 450 degree iron.

The process can be done on color treated and highlighted hair and takes two hours. If you color your hair at the same time, you’ll need to schedule three hours. Depending on the length and thickness of your hair, the treatment can cost from $175 to $375. However, in the long run the treatment will save you both time and money because you don’t need to come to the salon as often. No more regular trips to get your hair looking perfect before events. Also, each morning’s a breeze with no need to fuss before running out the door. If your hair is “medium” curly, the process results in 90% straighter hair.

MoroccanOil works to smooth and hydrate both curly and straight hair

If you have an afro it will be straighter but would still require work with a flat iron. Since the treatment is such a time saver, moms are giving the treatment to daughters as a graduation present to save time each morning during their first year of college.

Marilyn House of Style Salon carries the Moroccanoil line of hair products which are only available in salons. The products are designed for all hair types with hydrating formulas for both straight and curly hair manufactured without animal ingredients or animal testing. The Rockaholic products promise to unleash your inner rock icon with a whole hair care line from Livin’ The Dream sulfate-free shampoos to Punk Out molding gunk.

Adding Extensions

Extensions can be glued on or braided at the scalp, but clip on hair pieces are an easy way to change your look for the day without all that effort. Marilyn’s clip ons can add a colorful splash to your summer style or cover up a cowlick or area with thinning hair. Marilyn specializes in natural hair extensions because her customers asked her to dye extensions produced elsewhere then eventually convinced her to make them too.

Marilyn crafts her own extensions and can make them in a variety of styles and colors

Marilyn purchases hair in long strips and custom dyes the pieces. If you want shocking pink, yellow, orange, light pink, or blue strips in your hair, you can add one whenever you’re in the mood. If you want a natural look, the color of the extension can match your base shade or highlights so no one will know. Clip ons can add bangs or a bob for a day or even create a temporary layered look when more than one is used. Since they are made of human hair, they can be curled and styled for the perfect look.

Embracing the Curls

Oasis Hair Salon in Wintergreen shopping center provides a full line of hair, nail, and waxing services but the salon specializes in embracing curly hair based on the book, Curly Girls, The Handbook by Lorraine Massey. Oasis owner, Wafaya Abdallah, came to the curly philosophy after searching for an answer for her own hair.

Wafaya Abdallah, owner of Oasis Hair Salon

Growing up with an Egyptian background in a culture influenced by the United Kingdom, she struggled with her identity because she had curly hair in a straight-haired culture.

Since she was always searching for an answer, she listened when a salesman came to her shop with the DevaCurl product line and gave her the book. After reading it, she excitedly told everyone else to read it too. When they brought the hair products into the shop and played with them, they loved the results. Not long after, people saw the product in the window and stopped in to find out if they were really doing it in Rockville since their family and friends were raving about the curls from other locales such as New York. Wafaya and staff went to a full-training session which included cutting techniques.

From the Curly Girl book - Free your hair, and the rest will follow.

Then two days later on September 11th, 2008, Lorraine Massey came to their shop while visiting the area. Everyone continued to fall in love with her philosophy.

As the Curly Girl book explains “Free your hair, and the rest will follow.” Now Wafaya has women coming into her salon in tears to thank her saying “I finally love my hair.”

The three-part treatment first involves cleansing. Botanically-infused DevaCurl No-Poo is the cornerstone of the process. The hair is thoroughly wet and No-Poo is evenly distributed all the way to the scalp with a circular massaging motion. This ecologically responsible product does not have sodium laurel sulfates which are found in regular shampoos and damage curls. Next is hydration because curly hair dries out. The reason hair expands in humidity is because it wants moisture. If it’s properly hydrated this doesn’t happen. Last is “scrunch and style” to remove excess water and apply DevaCurl AnGEL moisturizer before sitting under a dryer to complete the process. DevaCurl Set It Free moisture block can also be sprayed on the wet curls for maximum frizz protection.

Other hair and nail products available at Oasis

Becoming a curly girl means you never have to run from the rain and humidity. You also don’t have to wash your hair on a daily basis. Every five days you simply do the three-step treatment at home. When sleeping, the hair is gathered into a pony tail near the top of the head so the curls aren’t crushed by the pillow.

Oasis has seen a 20% growth in business, mostly by word of mouth because of the curly philosophy. Oasis also carries the Curls line of organic hair care products and Zoya nail polishes which are formaldehyde, tolunene, camphor and dibutyl phthalate free. Focusing on helping women and children, the Salon also sells jewelry from BeadForLife.org, an international project to lift families out of extreme poverty by making jewelry out of recycled paper and magazines and launching community development projects.

Always in Style

Some looks never go out of style

Some looks never go out of style. On the walls of Marilyn’s House of Style Salon, old movie star pictures of Audrey Hepburn, James Dean and others confirm their hair styles can still be seen on the red carpets today. Hollywood hairstyles come back with a twist incorporating shags and mullets in new ways. These curl, straightening, and extension methods can transform and modernize any style.
